Final Fantasy I

Certainly, the graphical prowess of Final Fantasy I will seem dated when held up against Square's subsequent offerings. After all, this game debuted in 1987, so with the exception of the opening cinema there aren't many breathtaking CG sequences to dazzle your eyes. While you will encounter some well crafted enemies, the variety that fill up your entire PSP screen are not as plentiful as you would find in a more recent Final Fantasy offering. What you will get is a competent role-playing experience, which includes re-worked visuals and a new dungeon to be explored near the end of the game.

Final Fantasy I does have a story to tell.

While this isn't the first time Final Fantasy I has been ported over to multiple gaming systems, this easily appears to be the most worthy offering since its initial release on the Nintendo platform. In terms of story, Final Fantasy veterans might consider it to be a bit on the simple side when compared to the likes of Final Fantasy XII. It's not a bad story by any means, it just doesn't offer up the complexity you find in the later games. Final Fantasy I chronicles the story of young "Light Warriors."

You control a group of four warriors, each carrying an elemental orb that has been darkened by the game's main enemies known as Elemental Fiends. Each of your four characters can be customized using multiple classes, as well as specific types of armor, magic and weapons. As with old school RPGs, traveling is done on the world map. You'll encounter towns, castles, dungeons and even traverse the ocean. Combat occurs via random encounters with enemies and is of the turn-based variety. Random encounters are outdated, but were a staple of RPGs at the time Final Fantasy I was released.

If you have previously played Final Fantasy I on any other platform, there is very little here to warrant another purchase. A few tweaks aside, the look and feel of the game is remarkably similar to other incarnations. This package is certainly designed for those who perhaps joined the Final Fantasy party a little late. So, if you have never experienced how it all began, this certainly is an RPG worth adding to your PSP collection.

Highs
Old school role-playing at its finest; quality sound and character design by two industry greats; visuals re-worked for the PSP.

Lows
Random encounters; graphically antiquated when compared with recent Final Fantasy games; story not as in-depth as Final Fantasy fans have become accustomed to.

Final Verdict
Final Fantasy I Anniversary for the PSP is a must purchase for fans that may have missed out on previously released versions. The higher resolution, newly added dungeon and Yoshitaka Amano Art Gallery make this a very attractive package for Final Fantasy fanatics.
