There’s also a few of the RPG standards found in Brave Story. Enemies will come with their own weaknesses for players to take advantage of. There are also combo attacks to increase the damage against the opposition. When all three members team up to attack, be prepared for a high-powered attack. In terms of customization, players can create their own accessories to equip. Lastly, there’s even a charming bird-catching mini-game to behold. But be assured, this isn’t a dungeon crawler by any means.
When put in comparison to other RPGs on the PSP, Brave Story: New Traveler is gorgeous. Using the in-game engine, the cut scenes were put together nicely and add a lot to the storyline. Perhaps the biggest attraction about the graphics will be the art style. The character models and environments are highly detailed to go along with the exceptional art style. There are a few hiccups in the graphics department, namely the animations and special effects. In short, they are lackluster and dull.
This isn't your standard dungeon crawler
As for Brave Story’s music, it isn’t as nearly impressive. Never once did I feel compelled by the music to keep trekking through the game. The soundtrack needs to add an emotional hook that aids storyline and clearly Brave Story’s never did that for me. My mood throughout the game never reached a high point where I thought I was accomplishing something extraordinary. Beyond that, the voice acting and sound effects that were added into the game aren’t anything special.
After the game is completed, players can return to finish ongoing side-quests. But be alert, if players can get clear of first three to five hours of gameplay, there’s a good game deep down inside the belly of Brave Story: New Traveler.
Highs
The art style should be enough to draw interest from RPG fanatics.
Lows
Not enough character customization. The audio work is bleak and unsatisfying.
Final Verdict
Brave Story isn’t for everyone. The storyline drags along at a snails pace and the lack of customization options doesn’t benefit the replay value.
