These clones are supposed to be upgrades from the original in some way, yet it seems like Pixel missed that memo. Not only is there nothing new, playing the game brings most players to some kind of time warp to the past. Sure, there’s live action video between some levels, but the animations are things we haven’t seen for a good 15-20 years. It’s understandable that there is supposed to be a serious cultural factor that is played on, but what culture it’s meant for is the question.
This one is so simple that correctly trained primates can solve it.
What Hot Pixel has that is unique are those live action videos. Not that they are any good. The names to the episodes and games typically have nothing to do with the game(s) played. There were some complaints about loading times, though it seemed to load normally, though with the limited graphical strain (or any strain) would indicate that the load times should be nonexistent. However, even on the original PSP, there didn’t seem to be any issue with it. The game ran smooth and quick.
Finally, the artistry makes no sense. Sure, this reviewer is no art connoisseur, but the images relayed were old an outdated. It seemed to poke fun at ‘generation X’ yet obviously was not done so intentionally. Some may actually be embarrassed while watching these videos as a reminder to a stranger time, one that won’t be so easily forgotten. If there was a coolness level being aimed for, they shot too high and went backwards. Kids will and do laugh at some of the videos and to answer what was so funny, the response remains “it’s silly.”
Yes, perfecting a handshake was what we all love to do when on a long trip with nothing to do.
One tragedy after another, Hot Pixel is a cheap imitation that you’d expect to find on the street corner for a five minute quickie. It could be fun with the few customizations, but not worth the time and effort to play through it. It isn’t terrible and there are definitely many worse things, but that should give no respite. This poorly made game lacks focus, organization and any sort of elegance that would make it fun for almost any period of time.
Highs
Lots of mini-games.
Lows
Games are nearly identical, lack of originality, poor artistry.
Final Verdict
A weak title, it has plenty of games to play, but very few that are worthwhile.
