Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron

Of the four gametypes, Galactic Conquest is certainly the best to have returned. Reminiscent of Star Wars Rebellion, an older strategy game for the PC that never really took flight, using your brains and skills gives it a certain life that the campaign can’t even compare to.

These space battles look epic, but don't feel that way in the slightest.

In this mode, a small set of planets is under both yours and the enemy’s control. Using a set amount of credits (additional credits are earned through ‘plundering’) each player can research technology which troops can use in battle. The level 2 and 3 technology must be earned, as well as commanders to use. Those commanders come at a heavy price, but have great abilities like increasing planetary income or making troops more powerful.

After making whatever arrangements with payment and research, the real work comes in. Making and moving troops strategically amongst different world to take them over for resources and to diminish your opponent’s is what the game’s about. And very much like Rebellion, the choice to play through each fight is a great option. That means every battle can be a real challenge by evening the odds. There’s nothing quite like reliving the movie 300.

The campaign isn’t spectacular, but is fine to play. It’s apparent that it isn’t the point of the game. What really brings out the eyes of RS is multiplayer. If this isn’t shown by the greatness of the multiplayer, then the short campaign and almost too easy single player games has to be.

If this is multiplayer, it will be a great battle indeed.

Multiplayer is exactly what is in single player mode does, except with the expertise of a real live thinking enemy. That brings the game to a whole new level, one completely above the single player experience. It’s what Halo 2’s multiplayer was to Halo: CE, and though the at-home console versions of Battlefront obviously had this type of frantic gameplay, except now you can do it on the go.
