The three aforementioned modes provide hours of brain wracking fun, but there’s more. You can fire up the included puzzle editor to create your own boards, then share them with other Puzzle Guzzle owners via wifi. You can host multiplayer matches against friends with one UMD disc. There’s even a daily fortune generator. True, it’s nothing more than a paddle with a bunch of smiley faces on it, but it’s cute if you’re into that sort of thing.

Puzzle Guzzle is charming for sure, but it’s also got a few issues. Its overall aesthetic is quite bland (though you can change screen “skins” from a menu). Mascot voices are annoying and repetitive. When you’re in danger of losing, an obnoxious siren wails while the screen flashes red warning lights. An even more irritating computer voice orders you to “Hurry up! DO SOMETHING!” The collection mechanic is almost laughable to anyone but the most hardcore completist. The learning curve feels intimidating due to the unorthodox mechanics (especially when strange new pieces are introduced).

Even though it’s easy to poke fun at Puzzle Guzzle’s eccentricities and shortcomings, the developers deserve credit for packing in a lot of features and maintaining a budget price point. If you’re looking to kill some time during a bus ride or plane flight, you could do a lot worse than this.
